Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 162
S Martin – 5 November 2009
Worker Hit By Car
Please see enclosed self explanatory safety alert and message.
This incident could have been very serious or even fatal, the worker was fortunate to
only suffer minor injuries and be banned form working on Esso sites.
The worker had all the equipment he needed to do this safely, but decided he could do
without as the work would only take a minute – this decision almost killed him.
There were two other contractors working on the site, they had closed off one of the
lanes with a poor standard of barriers, they also witnessed the injured party working
without barriers but did nothing to address this – they were banned from working on
Esso sites for 3 months because of their breach of the golden safety rules.
Remember, always follow your procedures, always carry out a LMRA (last minute risk
assessment) and always intervene if you witness somebody doing something unsafe.
Even if you don’t care that they might get injured, you will care if you loose your job
because you didn’t talk to them.
Our individual safety is not solely in our hands, we have to rely on those around us to steer us away
from danger and warn us of potential hazards. We need safety awareness to be instinctive and form an
integral part of our working lives; it is this, in turn, that may save the lives of others.
