Hand Injuries in UK
Please see enclosed explanatory ExxonMobil Safety Alerts that relates to 2 more hand
injuries in the UK; one of these related to one of our employees, who was wearing a
glove with a cut protection rating of 3, that probably reduced the damage from what
could have been a serious incident to a very small cut.
Following this incident, all work procedures and JSA’s were reviewed and following the
training and hand protection review carried out at our December Safety Awareness Day,
a separate JSA has been created to give generic safety advice on minimum glove ratings
to be considered as part of your risk assessment when the task changes because of
unforeseen circumstances.
Remember, if you have to deviate from the JSA due to site specific conditions, stop,
think, and plan how you will do the work safely. Document your deviation, along with
the control measures taken on your clearance certificate. If you cannot think of a safe
way to do it, don’t do it – ASK!
Please remember that the last minute risk assessment is an ongoing process, not just
something you do when completing your paperwork.
Our individual safety is not solely in our hands, we have to rely on those around us to steer us away
from danger and warn us of potential hazards. We need safety awareness to be instinctive and form an
integral part of our working lives; it is this, in turn, that may save the lives of others.
