Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 111
S Martin – 16 October 2008
Mobile Crane Checklist
Please find attached a copy of our mobile crane checklist.
Earlier this year, we identified that any installation involving the use of a hiab or crane
vehicle was subject to additional risk that should be mitigated by additional, specialised
training.
In order to ensure that competent persons are always utilised, we sent our nominated
lead installers on a 4 day NPORS operators Card (National Plant Operators Registration
Scheme) training programme.
The course content includes the following:-
a) Inspection of lifting equipment and tackle
b) Safety signs and signal regulations 1996
c) Hazard identification
d) Relevant legislation – HSAWA 1974, PUWER 1998 & LOLER 1998
e) Selection of slings and tackle
f) Slinging techniques
g) Load weight assessment
h) Operators safety code
i) Assessment and testing.
This checklist should be completed to check, and record, the condition of lifting equipment
used on ALL lifts involving a crane or hiab vehicle. Under no circumstances should anyone
carry out a crane lifting operation without having passed the NPORS course.
Being safe depends on the choices we make everyday. The right choices can save lives. We want to
share safety information and help to raise industry awareness. Safety is not about getting one over on
the competition. We need to talk openly, share what we know and make the right choices.
If you have any queries regarding the Safety Bulletin content or require further information please
