Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 108

Carbon Footprint
In March 2007, we embarked on a programme to initially measure and understand our
company carbon footprint, and then set about reducing it.
Following investigation with World Resources Institute, Carbon Trust, Environmental Defence
Fund and DEFRA, we established that logically, the more successful we are at winning work,
the more sites we have to attend and the higher our company’s carbon footprint.
After many discussions, we decided to integrate the measurement of our data into the
XmoMan data and safety management information system. We have been able to determine
Co2 usage per man day per month of all employees and subcontractors, including travel to
and from work.
All timesheets from employees and subcontractors are now recorded and all site attendances
are automatically plotted (by project, by customer, or as a whole) using integrated grid
references onto a UK map. This allows us to identify where greater efficiency could have
been achieved.
Like many companies, we have a long way to go to fully understanding the full implications of
achieving carbon efficiency, however, our records do indicate that we have managed to
achieve a 31% saving per man day per month since we started addressing the issue. Our
customers will benefit too with the increased efficiencies associated with the new XmoMan
mapping technology.
Being safe depends on the choices we make everyday. The right choices can save lives. We want to
share safety information and help to raise industry awareness. Safety is not about getting one over on
the competition. We need to talk openly, share what we know and make the right choices.
