Walking Safely
Please see enclosed a safety bulletin that was shared with us by Quant.
It is easy to overlook the risks involved with walking at work, as it’s an everyday task that is taken for
granted. However, walking across work areas can have additional hazards, there are often uneven
surfaces, trip hazards, or wet / slippery ground conditions that add additional risks. Often you are
carrying materials or plant / tools or are distracted by others on site.
When planning the job, look around the work area and general site, what is the floor surface condition?
Are there any steps or kerbs? Are the weather conditions causing potential slippery surfaces?
The latest HSE statistics show that in 2017/18 there were 4 fatal accidents caused by slips, trips or falls
on the same level, 8,658 major injuries, and 13,072 over 7-day injuries. Slips, trips or falls on the same
level accounts for 31% of all non-fatal accidents reported.
Carry out a LPSA, document the hazards, and consider what your can do to control the risks.
If the condition of the site is causing walking hazards to others (public, site staff or other contractors) on
site, notify the site manager and report it as a PI or hazard spot.
If you are unable to adequately control the hazards, contact your line manager.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for
us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
