Manual Handling
Please see enclosed safety alert regarding an injury to a finger when manually handling a manhole cover
that was shared with us by JCI.
Although some manual handling is unavoidable, it is important to use mechanical aids whenever they
are available, e.g. the crane/hiab should be used to lift and place adaptor plates rather than trying to
manually lift them, or the MEWP should be used to transport heavy panels across site. If a tool is
provided for the job, use it. If you have any concerns about the tool or require replacements, contract
your line manager.
The latest HSE statistics show that there were 1431 major injuries and 16923 over 7 day injuries in
2013/14 caused by handling, lifting or carrying. Don’t be a statistic, follow the guidance from your
manual handling training.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for
us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
