Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 190
M Mott – 13 May 2010
Scaffold Board Failure
Please see enclosed a self explanatory bulletin regarding scaffold boards.
This highlights the need to always check materials and plant before use; even brand new
items can have potentially dangerous faults.
It also highlights the need to use competent contractors and materials compliant to industry
standards. All fixed scaffolds that we use are built and inspected by competent specialist
contractors and scafftags are attached.
Ensure you check the scafftags before using any fixed scaffold, however don't assume that
just as it has a valid scafftag that it is safe – carry out a visual inspection yourself:
Are there any signs of damage?
Are any boards cracked?
Are any poles bent?
If it doesn't look safe it probably isn't – so don't use it!

About Risk
Risk management is a big step towards accident prevention; however, it is dependent on the risk firstly
being identified, then controlled. We need safety awareness to be instinctive and form an integral part
of both our working and home lives; it is this, in turn, that may save the lives of others. Remember: if
shared, risks can be mitigated before they pose a threat.
If you have any queries regarding the Safety Bulletin content or require further information please
