Addressing Hazards at Source

At our annual health & safety awareness day on 11 December, we celebrated the success of some of
our top performing teams at the Hilton Hotel, Maidstone.

We are now in our 8 year of trading, and from the start have pushed hard to add value to our
customers by addressing hazards at source to prevent injury or harm occurring. We have also aimed
to add value by saving them the cost of calling-out another contractor to make safe.
Whilst our efforts to raise awareness showed an increase in near miss/hazard spots of 282% year-on-
year, what was particularly impressive was the number of hazards where we were able to eliminate the
risk at source by dealing with it ourselves.
Having now captured and reviewed the statistics from the last month of 2009, I can confirm that we
addressed and eliminated the risk totally on 121 near miss/hazard spots (an increase of 484% on last
year’s figures) and controlled or significantly reduced the risk (pending further action) on 35 (an
increase of 233%).
Personally, I am very proud of our achievements and to have actually made more than 150 potential
hazards safe (or safer), and almost certainly stopping several people from being hurt (or in some
cases killed) is another benchmark for our company.
Analysis of our incident data indicates that the highest chance of one of our employees having a
recordable or reportable incident is likely to occur in the first quarter of the year, so please be alert and
don’t fall ‘asleep at the wheel’.
Thank you for your hard work and vigilance in 2009, and I hope that we can make 2010 even safer for
us, our colleagues, contractors and customers.

About Risk
Risk management is a big step towards accident prevention; however, it is dependent on the risk firstly
being identified, then controlled. We need safety awareness to be instinctive and form an integral part
of both our working and home lives; it is this, in turn, that may save the lives of others. Remember: if
shared, risks can be mitigated before they pose a threat.
