Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 285

                                                  19 January 2012

                                              Clearance Certificates

As part of an unplanned site audit an Xmo team were identified as having completed the clearance
certificates without input or approval by the site representative. Although they were working safely,
this is a breach of section 12 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulation 1999.

The site has a legal duty under these regulations to inform you of the nature of any known hazard on
site, as well as any steps needed to be taken to protect yourself. This may include things such as
likelihood of the presence of hypodermic needles, or just steps to be taken in case of a fire (muster
           point etc).

It is also legal requirement under these regulations that we co-operate and co-ordinate with the site
representative and inform them of any risks arising due to our work.

It is therefore imperative that when completing the clearance certificate you discuss the job and the
hazards with the site representative and document the hazards and control measures, including any the
site informs you about. This must then be signed by yourself and the site representative.

If the site representative refuses to sign the clearance certificate, or you cannot communicate clearly,
DO NOT START WORK and contact your line manager.

We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything
we do has been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and
charts, some through visual presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we
receive information in a format that works for us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of
communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters, videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for
us to share health and safety information, please let us know. Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we
will do all we can to keep you well informed!
