Overhead Cable Strike
Please see enclosed bulletin regarding an overhead cable contact shared with us by ExxonMobil; this
hazard is addressed in our recent XmoHub on line training courses “Working with Cranes on a
Forecourt” and Preparation Before Working on a Canopy”.
This incident highlights the need to carry out LMRA and manage change. Always check for overhead
cables before using any plant (MEWP, tower, crane, HIAB etc) in line with the LMRA checklist. When
manoeuvring plant, always walk the route immediately before to look for hazards, including checking
ground conditions and for overhead obstructions/hazards. Banksmen must be used to guide vehicles /
plant manoeuvring on site, ensure the banksman has a clear view of the area and can be clearly seen by
the driver.
If anything changes during the job, such as another contractor arriving on site, an unexpected tanker
delivery, significant weather changes, or you find something unexpected when opening signage, always
stop and re-evaluate the site hazards. Document the additional hazards on your clearance certificate. If
the change increases the risk and cannot be adequately controlled, it may be necessary to suspend or
abandon the visit – if this is the case contact your line manager immediately.
We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for
us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
