Driver Safety Performance
At our last 2 annual health & safety awareness days, our employees have highlighted driving as the
most likely cause of a fatality within our business and along with a number of other control measures,
we monitor driving licences, fit speed limiters on our vehicles and implement driver management
software to ensure that our employees drive safely and within the law. Getting to a job, or getting home
early saves us money, but employee safety is much more important to us that that.
As part of developing our employee welfare strategy, we have developed a comprehensive driving
safely training module that we are rolling out to existing employees and building into all new employee
inductions.
We recently had a new employee join us from another sign company that had worked on filling stations
for several years, but the culture he was from meant that he raced everywhere and was educated that
time was money and he must get there as soon as possible and do everything in a hurry.
In one month, he had 299 recorded speeding events and was responsible for 79.3% of the companies
speeding events (he had 3.8 times more speeding events than all other employees combined).
In fact, his speeding record was responsible for 24% of all events in the whole company.
When we followed up the issue, the response was “I needed to get home, or I was in a hurry” – that’s
not acceptable to us.
Driver performance is recorded in the minutes of our HSSE Lead Team Meetings that are shared with
clients, so this one employee has let his peers down, despite not seeming to recognise that it’s a
problem.
The employee in question has since left and we understand that he will probably be racing around in a
competitor’s van in the future, working as a sign installation & maintenance engineer on filling stations
and rushing to get through the jobs as quickly as possible.
Please note that we invest time and money in managing what you (our employees) have told us is the
biggest risk of you having an accident and what some of our clients also deem important enough to
them to include in their Lifesaving Safety Rules.
