Health, Safety & Environmental Bulletin No 515
12 May 2016
Asbestos
The attached bulletin from Asbestos.com shows the hidden dangers from asbestos and the after effects
of 2000 tonnes of asbestos being released during the collapse of the two towers on 9/11. It is predicted
that the cases of mesothelioma and lung cancer cases due to 9/11 will spike starting in 2021 and peak by
2041.
In the UK there were 2538 mesothelioma deaths in 2013, and the number is projected to continue to be
around 2500 for the rest of this decade before declining. The number of asbestos related lung cancer
deaths is estimated to be in excess of 2000 per year. There are a further 516 deaths from Asbestosis.
There were 2,215 new cases of mesothelioma assessed for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
(IIDB) in 2014 compared with 2,145 in 2013.
Mesothelioma in Great Britain: annual deaths, IIDB cases and projected future deaths to 2030.

Our most recent asbestos identification was behind a shop soffit on a filling station. The team involved
had checked the asbestos register before starting work and its presence wasn’t recorded; their training
and vigilance may have saved their lives.
