MEWP Crush Injury
Please see enclosed safety alert regarding an injury due to being crushed by a Mobile Elevate Work
Platform (MEWP).
MEWPs are common on sites and use of them can be taken for granted, however these machines can be
dangerous if not treated with care.
So far this year we have had 10 PI’s related to the operation of MEWPs, most of which were caused by
maintenance issues of hired equipment.
When receiving a hired MEWP, always check it (using F15.6.2) before accepting the delivery or before
using it.
When manoeuvring MEWPS, always ensure that a banksman walks the route first and carries out a
LMRA, check for overhead obstructions or cables and check ground conditions. When moving the
MEWP any significant distance, the MEWP should always be lowered.
Use a banksman when manoeuvring to check your blindspots.
Always check the manufacturer’s instructions and the certificate of inspection before using any
machine; if these are not available contact your line manager.

We are all a product of learning. Every skill we have; everything we know; everything we believe and everything we do has
been learned throughout the course of our lives. Some of us learn best by studying graphs and charts, some through visual
presentations, and some by reading detailed text books. It is important that we receive information in a format that works for
us as individuals! That’s why at Xmo Strata we use a variety of communication platforms such as bulletins, newsletters,
videos etc. However, if you feel there is a better way for us to share health and safety information, please let us know.
Ultimately, your safety is in your hands – but we will do all we can to keep you well informed!
