Name:
Michael Mott
Job title:
Quality & Systems Manager (Xmo Strata) / Qualifying Supervisor (Xmo Veritas)
A day in the life of me:
A vast amount of my time is spent on developing the company's Management Information System (XmoMan); a computer system unique to Xmo Strata used to track all work carried out by the company. Every month I sit down with the Managing Director and discuss the requests I have received from XmoMan users for additional features / improvements. We agree which requests to implement and their priority status. I then have the task of designing, developing and implementing these features.
My other tasks include updating the web site (which is updated at least once a week), maintaining and updating the company's health and safety manual (usually several amendments are made per month), writing health and safety bulletins, entering audits onto customers' web sites, assessing potential new sub-contractors' paperwork, reviewing electrical test certificates, and keeping up to date with the latest electrical regulations and guidance to maintain our NICEIC accreditation.
Before starting at Xmo Strata:
When I left school I entered an apprenticeship as an electrician. After gaining my electrician grade I moved to a communications company jointing and testing fibre optic cables. I was quickly promoted and took up various roles including Tenders Manager, QA Manager, H&S Co-ordinator and NICEIC Qualifying Supervisor. When this company closed down I moved to Network Cabling Ltd (now Xmo Veritas Ltd) as an estimator.
The thing I most enjoy about my job:
I get paid to do my hobby! I have always been fascinated by computers and programming. The development of XmoMan came about when I mentioned to the Managing Director that computer programming is a hobby of mine.
It is also very nice that I can work from home and avoid hours of commuter traffic.
The thing I dislike most about my job:
I sometimes miss the camaraderie of working in an office; having people to bounce ideas off.
Training courses completed while at Xmo Strata:
CompEx7&8 - Electrical work in petrol stations
17th Edition Wiring Regulations
UKPIA
IIF - Incident & Injury Free
What makes Xmo Strata different to the rest:
Xmo Strata really believes in health and safety. All companies say they put health and safety first but Xmo Strata really does.
