Advanced Driver Training

17th April 2008

As part of our continual safety performance review process, we have identified that, particularly on maintenance jobs, as much as half our time can be spent driving to and from sites.

Driving risks are increased further when stormy weather necessitates attending numerous sites to make-safe, in conditions that are less than ideal.

To this end, I am personally committed to sending every Xmo Strata and Xmo Veritas company-vehicle driver on an advanced driving course during the next 12 months. As with all training, this investment in your own personal safety will be at our cost and you will be paid for attending.

Our road safety record over the last 5 years is excellent, but I feel that this investment, given that we drive more than 500,000 miles per year is money well spent.

Brake, the road safety charity, reports that in 2006, there were 858 people killed in crashes involving at-work drivers and 6,622 people were seriously injured.

The Department For Transport reports that in 2006, there were 7,618 light goods vehicles involved in accidents while journeying as part of work.

Let's make sure that no-one that we work with becomes part of these statistics!

Further information on driving in adverse weather conditions can be found on the Brake website
